In an effort to curb violence among students, 80 senior high
school students in Tangerang have been appointed by the police as
polisi siswa (school police) assigned to familiarize their peers with
the law and legal consequences of fighting.
“The student school
police are expected to be pioneers in the prevention of violence among
students,” Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Widada said on Friday.
He said the school police would also inform their friends about the legal consequences of drug offenses and criminal activity.
Ahmad
Abdullah, an official at the Tangerang municipality, said the school
police program was a collaboration between schools and the police.
The
80 students, carefully selected from the top 10 of their respective
classes at various senior high and vocational schools, followed a
two-month training course with the police. “I think this program will be
very effective because students can do a better job than the real
police or teachers in informing their peers about legal sanctions,”
Abdullah added.
